How do I prevent accidental back in stock updates by adding minimum inventory?

Imagine this:
You have dozens of customers who have opted in to a back in stock notification for a specific sold out product. Now, a customer who had bought the same product previously, returns it. After your quality checks, you add the product back to your inventory and your inventory is now 1 unit. There may be other scenarios too, where the inventory might accidentally increase by 1 unit.

What happens then?
All the back in stock notifications are automatically sent and after one customers purchases the product, the product will be sold out again and other customers who visit later will be disappointed to see the product being sold out again!

The solution: Minimum inventory threshold
To prevent these accidental back in stock updates, it's a good idea to keep a minimum inventory threshold. Back in stock updates will only be sent if the "in-stock" inventory is beyond this minimum inventory threshold.

What should my minimum inventory threshold be?
For all stores, we recommend that you keep a minimum inventory threshold of at least 3 units. This is enough to cover any accidental inventory updates.

For higher volume stores where you have more than 20 back in stock requests per product-variant, your minimum inventory threshold should be at least 10% of your average notify me requests per product-variant. For example:
If your top 10 products have avg. 50 notify me requests for each product-variant, then your min. inventory threshold should be 5 units
if your top 10 products have avg. 70 notify me requests for each product-variant, then your min. inventory threshold should be 7 units.

How do I set up a minimum inventory threshold?
Install our Shopify App, upgrade to our "Starter/Premium" plan, and go to Settings inside the App menu. Scroll to the Configuration section to change the minimum inventory threshold.

Note: Minimum inventory threshold is only available in the "Starter" plan and beyond. This feature is not available in the Free plan.
